About the National Art School
The National Art School is the oldest, most prestigious visual arts institute in Australia with origins that can be traced back to 1843. It has a rich tradition of artistic practice and a well-renowned alumni. Housed in the historic walls of the old Darlinghurst Gaol in Sydney’s premier Arts precinct, the NAS offers a select number of full time students, Bachelor, Honours and Masters of Fine Art courses and for the community a comprehensive range of part-time and intensive short courses.
The NAS utilises the studio based Atelier Method of teaching where there is a high ratio of staff to students with intensive instruction by professional practising artists taking place in a studio environment.
Courses
Full time
The NAS offers a select number of full time students, Bachelor of Fine Art, Bachelor of Fine Art Honours and Master of Fine Art courses.
BACHELOR OF FINE ART (BFA)
The Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree is a 3 year full time course of 36 weeks per year. It is a studio based course and is offered in the following disciplines - Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.
BACHELOR OF FINE ART (HONOURS)
The Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) is a one year full time coursework degree of 26 weeks taken over an academic year and is offered in the following disciplines - Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.
MASTER OF FINE ART (MFA)
The Master of Fine Art (MFA) (Research by Project) is a postgraduate research degree of 48 weeks, delivered full-time over two years and part-time over three years and is offered in the following disciplines - Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.
Departments
The disciplines taught at the NAS are Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. Art History & Theory and Drawing are core subjects underpinning the studio-based philosophy of the NAS.
Short Courses
The National Art School offers a range of short courses to enhance existing art practice for the general community and to supplement high school visual art learning.
Public Programs
The Public Programs at the National Art School include dynamic, stimulating and highly regarded short courses: the Summer School, Winter School, Semester One, Semester Two and the Outback Art Tour. Courses run over semesters and in winter and summer for periods of one week.
HSC Courses
The HSC Extension Course offers intensive studio intuition for outstanding Year 12 visual arts students.
William Dobell School
The William Dobell School which runs in July provides art tuition to visual arts students who have limited ranges of art studio facilities available to them.
NAS Mission
The National Art School’s mission is the education and training of exceptionally talented people at a tertiary level for careers as professional visual artists.
The School has a long been acknowledged as a centre of excellence in studio-based visual arts, research and the delivery of liberal education.

The National Art School, Sydney has several function and event venues, commercial filming and photography locations. Just 10 minutes from Sydney's central business district it provides the convenience of being close to the City whilst offering the perfect spot for your occasion or shoot location.
Formerly the old Darlinghurst Gaol, the National Art School, has locations for large, small, private and public functions and events, all situated within its historic sandstone surroundings.
The site here in Darlinghurst remains a popular choice for filming and photography shoots, providing a range of versatile locations for film, television commercials and magazine features.
