Our Courses

A wide range of subjects is available, and consideration is given to a student's future career plans when subject choices are made.  Subjects frequntly chosen by international students are; Accounting, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics with Calculus, English, English as a Second Language, Art, Photography, Graphics, Fashion and Design, Music, Computing and Hospitality.

Students are enrolled at:

  • Year 9          13/14 years old      1st year at High School
  • Year 10        14/15 years old
  • Year 11        15/16 years old
  • Year 12        16/17 years old
  • Year 13        17/18 years old     Pre University

 An excellend homestay service is offered to ensure that students are happy and well cared for. During their time at the College international students become part of a caring local family.  This gives international students the opportunity to gain an understanding and appreciation of New Zealand family life.

To meet the New Zealand Code of Pratice Requirements and Standards, regular contact is maintained between the Director of International Students, the Homestay Director and each student and their homestay family.

A proficiency in English language which allows the student to succeed in their chosen subjects and a good previous academic record are required. 

English Language Proficiency and Opportunities

Evidence of English Language proficiency is an enrolment requirement. English Second language classes are provided by trained and specialist teaching staff for students from overseas.  Students are  also “mainstreamed” (that is, attend our usual classes) to study other subjects. Senior students prepare for the English Literacy  Standards required for entry into New Zealand universities.

The city of Auckland - renowned for its beautiful harbour and frequently referred to as the “City of Sails” - is New Zealand’s largest city and business area. It is within easy access to many of the country’s main attractions.

Glendowie College is located in one of the affluent seaside suburbs of Auckland, just 20 minutes from the city centre.  The College is set in attractive surroundings and has extensive playing fields.  There is a frequent bus service to and from the city centre.

This location provides an excellent environment for academic, sporting and leisure activities. Attractive beaches, entertainment facilities, and three major suburban shopping malls are situated within easy reach of the College.


NEW ZEALAND - Benefits of study

New Zealand has an internationally recognised British-based education system with a clear qualification framework and pathways for secondary education into vocational training and the University sector. The secondary school year starts at the end of January and finishes in December.

New Zealand is situated in the South West Pacific approximately three hours flying time from Australia, it provides a peaceful and safe environment for studying. Well known for its beautiful scenery and clean unspoilt natural environment, New Zealand offers a wide range of sporting and cultural activities making New Zealand a diverse and interesting environment to live in. The population of four million people is made up from a wide variety of cultures. The climate in the South Island is temperate and in the North Island, sub tropical. Summer is from December - February, Autumn March - May, Winter June - August and Spring September - November.

Activities Programme

International students are encouraged to take part in the many activities offered at the College. Drama, debating and music are strong features of the College.

We offer individual musical instrument instruction, and musical performance groups (jazz band, orchestra, ensemble groups, choirs and school productions) are open for all who wish to participate.

Students are encouraged to choose from the full range of individual and team sports and outdoor activities offered.   They include;  Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Soccer, Squash, Table Tennis, Underwater Hockey, Volleyball, Dragon Boat Racing and Water Polo. 

Student Welfare

The Director of International Students, together with the Deans of each year level, provide student support in all pastoral care matters. This includes enrolment, orientation, academic programmes, insurance, designated caregiver and homestay service arrangements. Regular contact is made with extra care and homestays.
